Those who frequent the permit rooms or the beer bars may soon feel the heat of the state government’s decision of imposing an entertainment tax on the establishments that arrange for the live orchestra shows for the entertainment of the customers.
It is likely that the government expects these establishments to pay the tax amount in advance. In addition to that, all the pubs in the city too are expected to pay the entertainment tax in advance with immediate effect.
The government of Maharashtra has issued a government resolution (GR) in this regard. The GR says that all the beer bars and the permit rooms that put up live orchestra shows and come under the jurisdiction of the Pune (PMC) and the Pimpari- Chinchwad Municipal Corporations (PCMC) should pay Rs. 50,000 per month and those which fall outside the limits of the PMC and the PCMC will have to pay Rs. 25,000 in the form of the entertainment tax in advance.
The government has also stated that the decision will come into effect immediately. The decision taken by the government is an attempt to increase the government revenue under the Mumbai Entertainment Tax act, 192. The state government has asked the respective district administrations to look into the matter and undertake the necessary action as regards the implementation of the law.
In a press conference on Friday, an official from the entertainment tax department of the district administration said, “At present we do not have detailed information about the live orchestra shows being conducted in permit rooms and beer bars in the district. We will conduct an initial survey to identify such establishments.”
The official also stated that this is for the first time that any such entertainment tax is being imposed on the permit rooms and bear bars. Putting all the details for the perusal of the correspondents the official said, “As per the GR, pubs in five star hotels will have to pay in advance Rs 1 lakh, while other pubs are expected to pay Rs 50,000. The tax slabs for the pubs in Mumbai are double than rest of the state. In Mumbai, the pubs in five star hotels will have to pay Rs 2 lakh, while other pubs will have to pay Rs 1 lakh.”
With the new taxes being imposed, the owners of the pubs and the beer bars in the city have knit their brows and are likely to register their protest against this decision of the state government.
