After having witnessed the positive impact of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), which has been implemented by many other municipal corporations in India, Maharashtra is also brooding over the plan to execute infrastructure projects in the major as well as metro cities in the state.
The state scheme- Maharashtra Suvarana Jaynti Nagarohan Mahabhiyan, will help those municipal corporations, which do not fall under the JNNURM all over the state. The MSJNM will aim at providing basic needs of the people and will help them raise living standard by providing them schemes like solid waste management, water supply and transportation.
This scheme will be implemented in the āDā category municipal corporations as well gram-panchyats and main municipal corporations. Manu Kumar Srivastav, state urban development secretary, said that this scheme is based on the JNNURM to develop the Rural Maharashtra in order to bring about the equal change in the state.
Elucidating the purpose behind launching this scheme for the state, Manu Kumar said,
If the public partnership program (PPP) model does not work out, the state will provide assistance either by ‘viability gap funding’ or by providing loans at concessional rates. Funds will be allocated for the approved projects in the state budget.
A corpus will be formed by contributions from the Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA). A loan will be given through the Maharashtra Urban Infrastructure Development Company Limited (MUIDCL)
Srivastava said.
There are some other areas where this project will be implemented: electricity, energy saving, development of hill stations, developing the tourism sector, sewage treatment, basic infrastructure, school education.
