Stay Away from Loud Crackers

Celebration at the cost of someone else’s inconvenience can be termed as ‘nuisance’. Pune’s medical fraternity has advised people to refrain from bursting high-decibel firecrackers for it is harmful for senior citizens and children alike. Every year during and post-Diwali many cases of tinnitus (a constant ringing sound in the ears), perforation of ear drums, blocked ear and temporary hearing loss are reported.

Stay Away from Loud Crackers“Mostly children and senior citizens visit ENT doctors after Diwali complaining of many hearing related problems. The intensity of the crackers during Diwali is extremely high,” said Dr Vandana Joshi, president of the Association of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons, Pune.

The normal level of sound of firecrackers must be below or around 80 decibels. Anything beyond that can cause problems not only for ears but the heart as well. Furthermore, another rising trend in Pune is bursting crackers late in the night, hampering the much-required sleep for children and senior citizens. Lack of sleep affects them and causes irritability.

In the wake of bursting loud firecrackers and its subsequent consequences, a city-based senior citizens’ organization has decided to generate awareness among people about it.

“The sound of crackers is unbearable and it affects our hearing ability as well as our nerves. Our irritability and palpitation increases. It is a serious health hazard and leaves us breathless. During Diwali we are forced to stay indoors rather than go out and enjoy. This is certainly not acceptable and I beseech youngsters to celebrate a noiseless Diwali, so that we can also enjoy the festival of lights,” said Ajit Singh Pal (78), chairman of the Senior Citizens’ Forum at Wanowarie.

Pal also said that parents must be more responsible and make sure that children don’t buy loud crackers. He said that the only solution is that people must show restrain in celebration and don’t go overboard during such festivals.

I love reading comments, sometimes learning a lot from them or being amused by them. However, I do get bothered by snarky comments, so if a site gets inundated with them perhaps turning off the feature is best or letting readers report the abuse with a click to help the site monitor junk comments.
