The Symbiosis International University (SIU), Pune, recently announced its plan to start a school of liberal arts at its Model Colony campus from June 2011.
First time interacting with the press since taking charge as the new SIU vice-chancellor (VC), Bhushan Patwardhan said, “The proposed school will offer a four-year degree course in liberal arts, which will cover a wide choice of 40 to 50 subjects as electives, to go along with the main subject of study and will also have a weightage of 150 credits. The school is part of SIU’s bigger aim of promoting interdisciplinary studies. We also aim to draw more students from Europe, US and Australia. We shall initially start with a student intake of 60 seats for the liberal arts course. The admission procedure shall begin in a few weeks from now via an online form submission process. However, the final selection will be based on group discussion and personal interview. ” Students from all universities across the globe can apply for the course.
Liberal arts refer to a study that revolves around general knowledge and developing students’ rational and intellectual abilities. This is different from the professional, vocation and technical courses, which primarily emphasize on specialization.
With the concept of interdisciplinary learning, liberal arts provide scope to students to study a range of subjects, namely literature, languages, philosophy, history, mathematics and science, among others.
During the conference, Patwardhan also talked about other list of priorities that included internationalization of SIU activities; promoting new collaborations, both inter- and intra-institutes; expansion of student base; creating an academic credit bank that shall enable students to select a part of their course component from any other institution at national and international level. He also informed about Symbiosis Institute of International Business’ collaboration with the Berlin School of Applied Sciences to facilitate a two-year MBA-MA dual degree program under which students from both the institutions will get chance to study for a year in India and Germany. “We are also planning to start with chair and adjunct professorship in collaboration with the industry professional from different walks of life and voluntary organizations,” Patwardhan added.
SIU principal director Vidya Yeravdekar informed that the school of liberal arts comes as an extension of the Centre for Liberal Arts, Pune, which the Symbiosis had started in the year 2006 with an initiative to offer value added programs to its regular students. “Initially, we will start with the school functionalities from our model colony campus and eventually the school will move to a new campus,” ends Yeravdekar.

The American Political field has went to hell over the past couple decades due to extreme polarization. We need to stand up for our future and take back our world from Big Pharma, Big Tobbacco, Big Insurance and really just big corporations. It is time for our elections to stop being bought out.
