Swami Vivekananda, the monk with a vision, founded the organization called Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 for the spiritual upliftment of the country and to spread the thoughts and teachings of his guru Shri Ramakrishna Paramhans. Ramakrishna Math is the twin organization of the Mission which has contributed a lot to the worldwide spiritual movement called the Vedanta Movement.
Ramakrishna Math, Pune is a branch of the Kolkata based organization. The Math is a spiritual, philanthropic center advocating the value of service to man and hence service to God. The Math was affiliated to the Kolkata headquarters in 1984 and since then has been contributing in the spread of Vedanta Literature and the teachings of Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda in and around the city. By and by the Math is expanding the frontiers of its work by imparting quality education and medical assistance to the needy and the poor. The Math volunteers are reaching the otherwise inaccessible villages around the city with their educational and medical help.
The Ramakrishna Temple is a beautiful work of architecture. The domes and the Shikhara have been constructed to evoke the imagery of the Belur Temple in Kolkata. It is certainly not a Hindu temple but rather a Sarvadharma temple with the fusion of various visual ideas followed in the constructions in different religions.
Math is definitely not a tourist spot but a center of peace and spiritual self awakening. The solemnity in and around the Math should be maintained religiously.
The Math organizes various lectures on religions, seminars, discourses for spiritual guidance off and on. As mentioned above, being a philanthropic organization Ramakrishna Math, Pune runs other activities like library, charitable dispensary and many more.
