MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd) is all set to avail almost 6,000 prepaid electricity meters for installation at residences in Pune and Pimpri- Chinchwad. These prepaid meters are just like prepaid mobile cards in which the consumers can buy some amount of power units by giving some advance payment.

On Monday, MSEDCL authorities said that the plan for installing these meters has already been launched before in the state. In Kothrud, 27 prepaid electricity meters have already been installed.

The authorities also said that the first phase of the plan includes installing as many as 6,000 meters in Pune and Pimpri- Chinchwad. The priority list includes installing meters in apartments. The MERC (Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission) has given permission to MSEDCL to install 25,000 prepaid meters initially on an experimental basis in the state.

An official source said that the prepaid meter will be avail at a price of Rs 2,600. Consumers who will choose to have prepaid meters will get 5% concession in electricity bill. MSEDCL has stated that the meter will be provided with special accessories.

The calculation process for the bill will be done on the basis of the charges approved by MERC. Along with these meters, the consumers will also a consumer interface unit due to which now onwards the consumer will be able to make out that how much electricity is being consumed. It will basically calculate the amount that has been prepaid, the units of electricity consumed and the balance amount. A prior notice will be given by this unit to the consumer in case of recharge. These meters will enable the consumer to limit their use of electricity and will use electricity only when required. It will help the consumers financially, MSEDCL mentioned.

As per the power company, the power supply won’t stop at odd hours at night or on any national holidays if your meter is not recharged. However, you have to recharge the meter immediately on the next working day itself to avoid power cut. There are not even time restrictions as when to use the power units. There is also facility of recharging your meter online on the MSEDCL official website. The facility of recharging is also being made available at MSEDCL’s divisional offices soon.

The Pune zone of the MSEDCL has initiated the prepaid meter plan way back in April by installing 30 prepaid meters at commercial establishments in Lonavla.
