naproxen. The much awaited Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav began with a somber note yesterday. The artists and around 25,000 audiences observed a two minute silence to pay homage to the late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. This gala event was inaugurated by the executive president of Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, Srinivas Joshi. The event will continue for another four days. The audience cannot wait to get mesmerized by the performance of a kaleidoscope of artists.

On the inaugural day of the five-day music festival, people missed the person who had started it; the late Bharat Rratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi to commemorate his guru, late Pt. Sawai Gandharva. They also missed Srikant Deshpande, the person who was an active member in the team of organizers.

In the morning, the hall was packed with audience eager to listen to documentary named The Life Story of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. It was part of the film festival ai???Shajdaai??i??. A coffee table book of photographs of the music legend was also released on this occasion. This book also contains his views on the Indian music. A calendar having the theme of ai???Singing strings and stringing maestrosai??? was also released on this occasion. It has been created by a well-known photographer Sateesh Paknikar. Another calender that depicts the musical journey of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was also released on this occasion.

In the evening, the musical event started with an enthralling solo performance on traditional shehnai by Tukaram Daithankar. Mangesh Karmarkar accompanied him on tabla; they performed the raag Madhuwanti. He also played the natya sangeet “Vada jaau kunaala sharan”, which was appreciated by the audience.

This was followed by another gripping performance of raag Pradeep by vocalist Sanjay Garud, who belongs to the Kirana Gharana. He was accompanied on harmonium by Pramod Marathe and on the tabla by Prashant Pandav.

The audience will never forget the presentation of raag Marwa with ai???wilambat kyayalai??i?? ai???Piya more aaoai??? by Ashwini Bhide Deshpande. She also performed the intricacies of raag Marwa. Tanmay Devchake was able to match her mastery on harmonium and Bharat Kumar on the table. Later on, she sang the fast (drut) composition of the raag, ai???Mai re saanjh bhayeeai??? The audience sat in rapt attention listening to her 70 minute performance. She also sang “Aataa kothe dhave mana”, which is a very popular raag by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and concluded by singing a short composition based on raag Bihagada.

Raag Raageshwari in ‘wilambit’ composition set to ‘teen taal’ was presented by Satish Vyas on the santoor. He then played the ‘madhya’ and ‘drut’ composition, also based on ‘teen taal’. Mukunraj Deo played tabla with him. The audience did not want to end his performance, but he had to wind up as owing to time constraint.
