Performance on Jaltarang by Milind Tulanker – On 25th January 2012

The well known artist Milind Tulunkar will perform at the Bal Shikshan Mandir Auditorium in Mayur Colony at Kothrud. He has travelled across the world and achieved mastery in playing one of the rare instruments of the world. When he started his career, it was quite challenging as people were not aware of this instrument.
However, this did not deter him, and these days the organizers from across the globe approach him to perform shows. When he went to perform in Canada and US last year, all his shows were booked and he received a lot of appreciation.

Playing a jaltarang is not an easy task. The artist has to place China bowls in several bowls in a semicircle around him and fill them with varied quantities of water. The sound made by striking this bowl has to be synchronized into music by the artist; both Indian classical and light melodies can be played on a jaltarang.

Guru Nanak Dev was the first founder guru of Sikhs and his birthday is celebrated on the full moon day of Kartika. This auspicious day is the most sacred festival of Sikhs, in every corner of the world. On this day, in Pune, Sikhs celebrate this day by singing kirtans (holy songs) as early as from 5 in the morning. The purpose of these songs is to spread the teachings of Guru Nanak Sahib. Sikhs gather for the Prabhat Pheri (which symbolizes the teachings and existence of Sikh religion) early in the morning.

In Pune there are morethan30,000 Sikh families; all of them gather in various gurdwaras in all over the city to celebrate this day. The maximum gathering is at the gurdwara at Ganesh Peth where the celebration begins at 6 a.m. The president of Sikh Dharma Prachar Committee organizes kirtans in large scale. Kirtikaars are called from all over the nation to sing holy songs.

After the worship offering ritual is over, prasad (holy food) is distributed and langar (meal) is served in gurudwaras. People from all status gather together, sit together and enjoy the meal. They also contribute in making the langar and serve it too. The langar, for which everyone sits and eats together, denotes that all are same in the eyes of God irrespective of the caste and status.

In the evening katha program is organized and people gather to listen this. This program begins at about 7 p.m. and is continued till 2:30 am the next day. Aarti and kirtaan is also done and after this the main celebration of Guru Nanak birthday is done. In the evening the Sikhs from all over the city light candles and diyas in their house and the gurudwaras. Gurudwaras are also decorated with marigold flower garland and electric lights. Thus this is how Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated in a grand way, in Pune.
