Creativity and Science going hand in hand will take us a long way:
Robocon: An opportunity and the year 2010:
“Genius needs freedom of excess, and that is what Robocon gives to all Undergraduates across South Asia”
Robocon, short for Robotic Contest, is an interesting game combined with intellectual exercise for budding engineers and their enthusiastic instructors who are determined to innovate and create machines for producing desired results.
Robocon, as some might be aware of, is the most prestigious robotics competition in South-East Asia. On top of that, it is one among the selected few competitions in which the team is not just a group of individuals, but also the visage of the institute and country they come from.
IIT Kanpur was the pioneer to this start off and the host for Robocon in India, in 2002 with collaboration with Doordarshan.
Participation in this activity is a neck to neck competitive experience from concept design of a system of robots programmed to perform according to rules of the game played, and to score a victory beating the competitors on a high precision technical Contest Area, all this according to a Theme declared by the Host Country.
International Robocons are chiefly sponsored by Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), which embraces Doordarshan (Prasar bharati) of India as a member, which has been organizing all activities in India for the last five years in collaboration with Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) Pune, India.
The International Robocon 2008 was held at MIT, Pune in August 2008, where 17 Engineering Colleges from 16 countries participated. The Theme for Robocon 2008 declared by India was ‘Lord Govinda’, a traditional Indian Deity who used to play earthly games by capturing Butter from the pots carried by Gopis. Interestingly animated on the field in MIT and colourfully broadcasted by Doordarshan and other members of ABU across the world. The Robocons have always been a grand success.
The International Robocon 2009 was held in Tokyo Japan in August 2009 with the Theme ‘Kago,’ the traditional Japanese palanquin, carried by human beings replaced by robots. The winners were a team from China and they completed the task consistently in 18 seconds. Bravo! Indeed.
The next International Robocon2010 is scheduled to be in Cairo, Egypt with the subject matter of Robo-Pharaohs who build Pyramids. To decide India’s participation in the International event, during August 2010, Doordarshan-MIT is organized the National Robocon 2010 in March 2010.
The Cairo International Stadium will now decide the robo pharaohs on the basis of two coloured teams and who builds their robots faster, each round lasting only for 3 minutes.
So to all those science freaks out there, May the best robo-pharaoh win!

Cheers keep up the good work, excellent writing on your site. Do you know if anyone signed up for Digital TV on PC by StopPayingCableBills company? I first learned about it in a ZD Net window and I assume that it is endorsed by them. It’s a one time charge of $28.00 of so and it supposedly enables you to receive up to 3000 stations worldwide. Sounds too good to be true and I would first like to talk to someone who has actually signed on.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
