In the coming times of replacement and personalizing technology, it’s all about the money and the quality. Comfort is what we demand as a major middle class society and later acquire by hook and crook. But we find greater pleasure in knowing that we, ‘the smart middle class population’ did this the economical way!
‘Nano’ means ‘small’ in Gujarati, which is the home ground language of its founders. The Tata Nano is a rear engine, four passenger, highly comfortable car built by Tata Motors, Primarily to flood our metropolitan roads, and attract the aware and ‘wanna-be’ middle classes of the Indian market. This car has good fuel efficiency, further attracting buyers.
Rival car manufacturing companies in India have also come up with the idea of building small, family cars. But the Tata Group has been the first to hit the markets. This car has especially hit the economical class consumer markets.
Replacing the rickshaw: Even though as of now Tata has witnessed a delivery of 7,500 cars, the replacement of the rickshaw seems to be a long way for our poverty stricken, 67% unemployed India.
The rickshaw drivers now have gained a fascination towards the Nano. The Nano is priced the same as the auto rickshaw. The Mumbai drivers now seek permission from the RTO to allot to them permits allowing them to drive the Nano. The Nano being a family car, it offers safety from extreme weather conditions of the city, especially rains as well as better comfort. They are also looking forward to the increase in the pay by the meter that will prove beneficial to the drivers and their families.
But not everybody seems to be kicked with the idea of replacing the auto rickshaw. Auto-rickshaw dealers worry that if the Tata Nano is permitted to hit the sales of rickshaws in the growing Indian market, the sellers and markets already have to worry about with the very likely possibility of a fall in sales of auto rickshaw passengers if even they choose to buy the car instead of travelling in one owned by the driver.
The Tata Nano:
Pros: economical, safe, comfortable
Cons: fire safety, engine at the back, short battery life
Also, what we often miss out on and need to be reminded of, are that, India lives in its villages. There even this car may not be needed, wanted or even supplied.
Incomparably crowded streets are what our future is considering the road conditions in India. This change may turn our metropolitans, especially those of our suburbs into a disaster. Is this a change we should be looking forward to?
